Beyond the Frame Festival 2022

Japan's first XR (VR, AR, MR) film festival, this event brings together the world's most talked-about works!
The theme of this year’s festival is "Changing the 'Everyday' / Transcending the 'Common Sense'".
For more than a century since the film was born,creators have devoted enormous energy and passion to creating numerous works and various techniques of expression to embellish them while fascinating people.
And now, video expression is moving beyond the traditional horizontal frame to include 360, 180, and vertical formats that have never been seen before, with even creators of brand-new works that combine video expression with the latest technologies such as VR, AR, and AI.
At Beyond the Frame Festival, we will introduce works that boldly take on new challenges without being bound by conventional frames in hopes to respond to the trend of the times and accelerate the development of visual culture.
The festival will also make every effort to help such filmmakers spread their wings to the world.
This event will be held in collaboration with the MUTEK.JP electronic music and digital art festival taking place in Shibuya in December 2022. Montreal-based MUTEK, an organization supporting the discovery and development of talented human resources involved in the cultural arts, continues communicating to the world. This year, an XR project titled "MUTEK Immersive Collection" has begun. Together with members of MUTEK, this event will explore the future of XR from varied perspectives.

A talk event and get-together featuring two guests from France, renowned as a leading country for XR, will be held. Guests include Floréal Films Producer Katayoun Dibamehr and Lucid Realities CEO & Producer Chloé Jarry. Works produced by Floréal Films have won the Grand Prize in the XR category at the Venice International Film Festival for two years straight, while Lucid Realities produce and distributes innovative XR experiences. This event offers a rich opportunity to learn about real-world cases from France.

2022 is being called Year One of the Metaverse. As a practical matter, how will our lifestyles evolve in the future? Following a video message from Joe Hunting, director of the ""We Met in Virtual Reality"" documentary that records the everyday reality of people living in the Metaverse, VR animation director Keisuke Itoh, VR instrument creator Lactoice, and 『KASO』Butodan yoikami will engage in discussion. The moderator will be Katsutoshi Machiba, Festival Director of the Beyond the Frame Festival.
